Ten Commandments for Lethal Force Encounters

  1. Do NOT call 911 in a panic.
  2. Do NOT leave the scene.
  3. Do NOT move or tamper with any evidence!
  4. Do NOT any weapon (gun, knife, etc.) in either hand when the police officers find you!
  5. Do NOT provide an “official statement” to any law enforcement officer until consultation with your attorney!
  6. Do NOT fall for the “Good Cop/Bad Cop” routine! Be polite but firm in your request for an attorney. “I will eagerly speak with you after I have the opportunity to speak with my attorney. Until then, I wish to exercise my Constitutional right to remain silent”.
  7. Do NOT argue with law enforcement personnel about your actions with the lethal force event.
  8. Do NOT lecture law enforcement officers on applicable case law or your Constitutional rights.
  9. Do NOT fail to use “Sir” or Ma’am”. Be polite and as professional as you can be.
  10. Do NOT argue about handcuffing/arrests/detention. Cooperate with all directions.
